“Lord, be merciful to me; Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.” -Psalm 41:4
The way we confess to God helps us learn how we should ask for forgiveness from others. Notice the words used in Psalm 41:4. The words used show a careful and humble-like confession. Below is a list of five important statements for making an apology to others.
- Express regret: “I’m sorry” or “I feel badly about what I did.”
- Accept responsibly: “I was wrong” or “it was my fault.”
- Make restitution: “What can I do to make it right.”
- Genuinely repent: “I don’t want to continue hurting you. I know that it is wrong and I don’t want it to happen again.”
- Request forgiveness: “Will you please forgive me?” or
“I value our relationship, and hope you will forgive me.”
Humility is key to our relationships with God and others. When there is no humility, then there really is little regard for God or others.
